Often I wonder about our kind
I pray sometimes
Because when they push us against the wall, we never push back
We’ve become a people controlled by capitalism
& for a poor nation, we are awfully classist
We raise placards here & there, rebuff our leaders, protest vocally but still vote for the wrong people or not even vote at all
We numb ourselves with highs & lows, just to pass the time
We think but we don’t do
The death toll is pretty much a game of numbers yearly, the kids are hungry & out of school, spending the better part of their adolescent to teenage years hawking
People are displaced from their homes, young girls abducted & molested at their youth
The system is failing
But “thank God it’s not happening to me” you say, everything seems okay & manageable
This sickness is like a cancer
The news is the most depressing thing right now – same shit, different day
We didn’t learn from Fela’s lyrics & trials which is our current reality & more
This terror is right at the root
The bombs are detonated by the very people that placed their hands on their chests & swore to protect us
It’s hard to be optimistic
The writing is on the wall so what other sign do we need before we fight & overthrow this sham of a government
But we’re told to keep our fingers crossed
We are being promised a better Nigeria – term after term after term
The ramblings never stop, the fake love burns like a bullet from a gun
This we know, & knowledge is power. Now, we have an edge, I hope we recognize this & devour these cowards.
