My service provider currently reads “Happy_Independence” (as opposed to MTN) at the top left corner of my phone & I am really astounded by this manipulation. This country used to be a diamond among stones back in the 70s & 80s. You know, dreams were more feasible & people had the tendency to live up to & more than their expectations. Not to say that those are not happening anymore but if there was a shelf life for that eventuality, it has been further reduced by half.
They tell you to shine but they are the same people to dim your fire. They ask you to give so much to the country by serving “diligently” but they never give in return.
A parasitic & manipulative relationship is what this is & even saddening is that we have accepted & normalized this behavior. “We,” because I am also guilty of this crime.
It’s easy to find distractions (exhibit A; I want to buy a keyboard), healthy even, from this preposterous nation but I wonder if that is helping us grow or just a temporary means to survive the country & not necessarily a means to an end.
The fake gestures from leaders is sickening & the one I cannot stand is the shady social media posts (there is so much of that today, you hate to see it) & speeches by these people claiming that they are in this fight with us & yet again, remind us about how we have a major role to play in the development of this nation. Okay, we get that. But how about you Sir? It’s not about donning the most chiseled attire & looking camera perfect, Sir.
Now, not to say one problem is bigger or more pertinent than the other but this post, & my heart, goes out to the STILL abducted Chibok girls who were barely teenagers at that time.
It has been over 5 Years.
Maybe you could take a moment to think about them while you’re reading this. Think about the gory things they have had to experience, think about the ones who have lost their lives, think about their parents & relatives, think about how much this nation has failed our girls. Surely, there’s still some atom of humanity even in the worst of us. The story about the events that led to their abduction is still a conspiracy theory but we will talk about that another day.
So, what exactly is “happy” about this “independence?” Independence from what really?
At this point, most of us are just kind of winging it. Try as hard as you can to forget about the conflict & propaganda in this nation, but all you’d end up doing is boiling the ocean.
Federal brutality, embezzlement, corruption, poverty, classism, deceit, manipulation, the list goes on.
It’s not rocket science that if we keep moving at this pace, there’s only one ending. Rome didn’t fall in a day & quite frankly, I don’t intend to hold my breath for Nigeria.
I’m not about to tell you what & what not to do to help the cause of this nation though lol. I just want you to really think about this nation.
Sir – being gender-neutral.
Thank you very much for reading. 😊
Hmmm! Its really thought provoking. We all see Our great nation different. I assure you that some see a land that flows with milk and honey while others only see pain and oppression. What i see is a nation that’s not working. A failed system burrrr…what do I know?
You are not wrong. There is a fundamental problem & ignoring it won’t help anyone. Cheers.
